JON C. LAKEY / SALISBURY POST The Second Creek Game Land in Western Rowan drew in hunters from Rowan and surrounding counties to the 1,100 acre site for the first day of dove season. The bulk of the hunters arrived at the cutover corn fields at 5:30 AM to find a spot and take advantage of peak activity times for the migratory mourning and white-winged dove. The 2017 North Carolina dove season is broken into two segments: September 2 until October 7 and then November 22 until January 15th of 2018. Aside from the North Carolina hunting license, hunters hunting migratory game birds in North Carolina are required to have certification in the Federal Harvest Information Program (HIP). Use of the Second Creek Game Land also requires a special permit to hunt. Saturday, September 2, 2017, in Salisbury, N.C.
