OWOSSO, MICHIGAN — Sheila Mondeau has been named the new publisher of The Argus-Press, marking a leadership transition for the historic local newspaper.
Boone Newsmedia President and CEO Steve Stewart announced the hiring Tuesday, describing Mondeau as a capable leader with a deep dedication to the newspaper and its employees.
“Sheila has impressed me in the short time I’ve known her as one who is smart, has a can-do spirit, loves the newspaper and our team of employees, has earned the respect of her colleagues and is willing to learn and adapt as The Argus-Press embarks on a new era,” Stewart said. “While outside candidates were considered, Sheila emerged as the obvious choice. She will bring much-desired continuity, helping us build on the strong foundation laid by Tom and Cathy Campbell.”
The Campbells, who announced their retirement in April, have led The Argus-Press through decades of change and growth. Tom Campbell joined the company full-time in 1982 and has held various leadership roles, including business manager, general manager, and publisher. Cathy Campbell began her career as a high school co-op student in 1979 and eventually led the advertising department. The couple plans to fully retire by early summer and is currently assisting with the leadership transition.
“Cathy and I are thrilled to welcome Sheila into her leadership role,” Tom Campbell said. “We appreciate that Steve Stewart and Boone Newsmedia value continuity in their newly acquired organizations and recognized that Sheila was a natural choice to be my successor. In her new role, she will ensure that our commitment to customer service stays at the highest level and that the newspaper will continue to focus on local news first and foremost.”
Mondeau, a Flint native who has lived in the Shiawassee County area for more than a decade, joined The Argus-Press in 2021 as an advertising assistant. She holds a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Kettering University and previously worked as a manufacturing and advanced manufacturing engineer for several automotive suppliers.
“This new role is something new and challenging,” Mondeau said. “Since joining the team, I’ve worked to make my own responsibilities more efficient, and now I’m looking forward to helping others do the same.”
In April, the Campbell family announced the sale of The Argus-Press to Boone Newsmedia, a Tuscaloosa, Alabama-based company that owns and/or manages more than 60 newspapers, magazines and related digital products across seven states, including Michigan.
BNI formed a new Michigan company, Owosso Newsmedia LLC, to own The Argus-Press and its related print and digital products.
Published continuously since 1854, beginning with the Owosso American, The Argus-Press — now in its 131st year — has been a cornerstone of news and information in Shiawassee County for more than 170 years. The paper was under Campbell family ownership for four generations, making it one of the longest-running independent, family-owned newspapers in Michigan.
